The Lawn Bowls Club

The Lawn Bowls Club

I hope all members enjoyed a safe and happy Christmas with friends and family and that 2008 is a great year for all our members. We commenced our bowling year with a very successful twilight game against Canberra South, played at Canberra City bowling club on Monday 4 February. Forty-two players in all attended, despite the forecast of rain, which held off until the last end. The game was followed by great fellowship, which included pizzas washed down with suitable refreshments. This annual game has continued for about twenty-five years and we hope that we can maintain an affiliation with Canberra South, despite that being "homeless" at the present time.

Two new members have now been accepted into the Turf Bowlers:- Neil Patchett and Bill Scanes and we hope they enjoy many happy times with us.

Our raffle nights at the Canberra Club have been most successful and have been well attended by our members, and which are followed by social interaction over a meal at the bistro. This revenue is most important to our survival and with new arrangements within the parent club, we can expect to be asked to run the raffle once per month.
We have some interesting events coming up, which includes our next social game at City on Friday March 14, where we hope to hone our skills for participation in the annual Tattersalls Turf Bowling Carnival to be held in Broadbeach 30 March - 4 April. Forty two members have indicated their acceptance for this carnival, and all will be accommodated at the same place, which is a short walk to the carnival.

We hope to arrange a two or three day excursion to an undetermined as yet country town in May and you will be kept informed as we get closer to the time.

Upcoming Events

It is pleasing to see that 77 members have renewed their memberships for 2008. Maybe there are some who have overlooked the reminder. but we would be grateful if you intend to be part of the "Turfies", that your subscription be forwarded to the Canberra club at your earliest convenience. The $11 you pay for subscription is very good value, as we try to provide green fees and some nibblies at social games, as well as subsidies at the AGM and Christmas party.

Raffles

Raffle nights:Tuesdays 4 March and 8 Aprilat our parent Canberra Club from 5.30 pm. These are always an enjoyable evening and is a very important fund raiser for our club. Most attendees stay on for dinner at the bistro and it is a most enjoyable social event. Last raffle, we raised $325....a terrific result!

LATEST NEWS
FORTY-two members and ladies attended the 43rd Annual Tattersalls Turf Bowling Carnival in Broadbeach in Early April. These carnivals are attended by teams from Western Australia, South Australia, two teams each from Sydney and Melbourne, Newcastle, Brisbane Singapore and Canberra. These carnivals are very competitive and some very good bowls results. We performed well to reach fourth place overall and were unlucky not to topple a couple of the top teams. Our selectors, Doug Nancarrow and Frank Hornblower did a great job juggling the teams so that all received a fair share of games. The next carnival is planned for Sydney and we hope to take a large contingent again to what is not only competitive bowls, but a wonderful social event.

Please also note that the popular annual trip to Greenwell Point will again be in late September. Ron Kirk has once again put in a huge effort to make this a success and we will again be competing for the Ron Kirk trophy against Greenwell Point Bowling Club. Those interested should contact Frank Hornblower.
